Computer Won’t Start or Keeps Crashing?
A computer that will not start, repeatedly crashes, freezes, or displays unfamiliar errors can be frustrating—especially when important photographs, documents, or business files may be at risk. The problem does not necessarily mean that you need a new computer.
I’m John Zettel, the owner and technician at PCRuns. I help Milwaukee-area homeowners and small businesses determine what is wrong, understand the available options, and decide whether repairing the computer makes financial sense.
You will receive a straightforward explanation before any paid work begins.
No pressure and no obligation. Computer service is available by appointment.

Problems This Service Can Investigate
You do not need to know the technical cause before contacting PCRuns. Describe what the computer is doing, when the problem began, and whether anything important is stored on it.
Diagnostics and system recovery may help when:
- The computer turns on but Windows will not load
- The computer is stuck in a startup or repair loop
- A blue-screen or other error repeatedly appears
- The computer freezes, restarts, or shuts down unexpectedly
- A storage drive is missing or cannot be detected
- A Windows update or software installation has failed
- The computer has become unusually slow or unreliable
- You hear unfamiliar noises from the computer or storage drive
- Important files may be trapped on a computer that will not start
- You are unsure whether the problem is hardware, software, or both
Some symptoms have several possible causes. For example, a computer that will not start might have a Windows problem, a failing storage drive, damaged memory, a power problem, or another hardware fault. Proper evaluation helps avoid replacing parts unnecessarily.
What the Free Evaluation Includes
The free initial evaluation is intended to identify the likely problem and determine the most practical next step. Depending on the symptoms, I may inspect the computer’s physical condition, startup behavior, storage health, memory, Windows installation, connections, and any visible error messages.
The evaluation is not a promise that every problem can be fully diagnosed immediately. Intermittent failures, damaged storage devices, and complex hardware problems can require additional testing. If extended diagnostic work would involve a charge, I will explain that before proceeding.
Whenever possible, I will answer three important questions:
- What is most likely causing the problem?
- Can the computer be repaired or recovered safely?
- Does repairing it make more sense than replacing it?
A quick check now can sometimes prevent a smaller problem from becoming a more expensive failure.
What to Expect
Tell Me What Is Happening
Call or send a message describing the symptoms, when they began, and whether important files may be at risk.
Bring Me the Computer
Local pickup or a convenient public meeting location can be arranged. Please include the charger or power adapter, especially with a laptop.
Receive an Honest Evaluation
I will examine the computer, explain what I find in understandable language, and discuss repair, recovery, upgrade, or replacement options.
Approve the Work
You decide whether to proceed. No paid repair or part purchase will be completed without discussing the expected cost with you first.
Possible Solutions
The right solution depends on what caused the problem and the computer’s overall condition.
Startup or Windows Repair
If Windows is damaged but the storage drive and other hardware remain healthy, it may be possible to repair startup files, remove a problematic update or driver, correct system corruption, or restore Windows to working condition.
Windows Reinstallation
When repairing the existing installation is not dependable, reinstalling Windows may provide a cleaner and more reliable result. I will discuss protecting or recovering your files before a reinstall whenever the condition of the computer permits it.
Storage-Drive Replacement
A failing hard drive or SSD can cause slow performance, freezing, missing files, startup errors, and complete failure. If the drive needs replacement, I can research a suitable part and explain how the replacement could affect speed, reliability, and cost.
Memory or Other Hardware Repair
Faulty memory, poor connections, overheating, power problems, and other hardware failures can sometimes create symptoms that resemble a Windows problem. Testing helps determine whether replacing a particular component is worthwhile.
File Recovery Before Repair
If personal or business files may be at risk, protecting those files may need to come before repairing Windows. PCRuns can attempt appropriate recovery from readable or partially accessible drives.
A drive that clicks, grinds, or repeatedly disappears may have physical damage. Continuing to run it can make recovery more difficult. In those cases, I may recommend stopping immediately and consulting a specialized data-recovery laboratory rather than risking further damage.

Repair, Upgrade, or Replace?
An older computer is not automatically a bad computer. If it still meets your everyday needs and has one reasonably repairable problem, repairing or upgrading it may cost considerably less than buying and setting up a replacement.
Repair or recovery may make sense when:
- The computer still performs the work you need it to do
- The problem is limited to one repairable component
- Your programs and connected equipment work well with it
- An affordable storage or memory upgrade could extend its useful life
- The repair costs substantially less than a suitable replacement
Replacement may make more sense when:
- Several expensive components are failing
- The computer cannot reliably run supported software
- The repair approaches the value of a dependable replacement
- The computer no longer performs the work you need it to do
- Continued reliability is more important than extending its remaining life
If replacement offers better value, I will tell you. PCRuns is here to help you make a sensible decision, not to sell an unnecessary repair.
Cost and Turnaround
The initial evaluation is free. The eventual cost depends on the cause of the problem, the amount of testing or repair required, whether files must be recovered, and whether a replacement part is needed.
Simple software problems generally cost less than storage replacement, extensive file recovery, or repairs requiring multiple parts. Parts are priced separately when needed. I can research an appropriate replacement part and discuss the expected total before it is ordered.
You will receive an explanation of the recommended work and likely expense before deciding whether to proceed.
Turnaround also depends on the problem, availability of parts, the condition of the computer, and the number of repairs already scheduled. I will provide the most realistic estimate I can after evaluating the computer, but I will not promise a completion time before understanding what is wrong.
Your Files and Privacy
Your photographs, documents, accounts, and personal information are treated carefully. I use only the access reasonably needed to diagnose the problem, perform approved work, and confirm that the computer is operating correctly.
Whenever possible, I avoid opening personal files unnecessarily. If I need a password or additional access to complete an approved repair, I will explain why it is needed.
No repair can guarantee that files on a damaged or failing drive will be recoverable. If important files are at risk, tell me before diagnostic or repair work begins so that data protection can receive the appropriate priority.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a computer evaluation take?
It depends on the symptoms. Some problems become apparent quickly, while intermittent failures or storage problems may require longer testing. I will keep you informed if the computer needs additional diagnostic time.
Will I lose my files?
Not necessarily. I attempt to use non-destructive diagnostic and repair methods when practical. However, a failing drive, severe corruption, or Windows reinstallation can place files at risk. Tell me immediately if the computer contains anything you cannot afford to lose.
Can you recover files from a computer that will not start?
Often, the files remain accessible even when Windows will not start. Recovery depends on the condition of the storage drive and whether the data has been damaged, deleted, or encrypted.
Do I need to know what is wrong before contacting you?
No. Simply describe what the computer is doing. Error messages, unusual noises, recent updates, power interruptions, or changes that occurred shortly before the problem began can all be helpful.
Should I keep trying to turn on a computer with a failing drive?
If the drive clicks, grinds, disappears, or produces repeated file errors, stop using the computer and request an evaluation. Repeated attempts can sometimes make a failing drive worse.
Will you repair the computer without contacting me?
No paid work will begin without discussing the recommended solution and expected expense with you first.
What should I bring with the computer?
Please bring the charger or power adapter, particularly for a laptop. If possible, also make a note of any error message and explain what happened before the problem appeared.
