Slow Computer and Performance Help in Milwaukee
A slow computer does not always need a tune-up—and a tune-up cannot overcome every hardware limitation. Poor performance may involve startup software, limited storage, Windows problems, malware, overheating, insufficient memory, or a slow or failing drive.
I’m John Zettel, the owner and technician at PCRuns. I help Milwaukee-area homeowners and small businesses identify what is slowing a Windows computer, correct practical software problems, and decide whether maintenance, repair, an upgrade, or replacement makes the most sense.
You will work directly with me. I will explain what I find, which improvements are realistic, and the expected cost before beginning paid work.

What Performance Problems Can Be Evaluated?
Similar symptoms can have very different causes. The goal is to identify the practical bottleneck before removing software, changing settings, or recommending parts.
Slow Startup
Windows takes an unusually long time to reach a usable desktop because of startup applications, updates, storage performance, or another underlying problem.
Programs Respond Slowly
Applications take too long to open, pause during ordinary work, or become difficult to use when several programs are running.
Low Storage Space
The system drive is nearly full, Windows cannot complete updates, or large and duplicate files make available storage difficult to manage.
Freezing or Crashing
The computer repeatedly stops responding, restarts, or displays errors that may involve Windows, software, memory, storage, temperature, or other hardware.
Unwanted Software
Unused programs, manufacturer utilities, browser add-ons, trial software, or excessive background applications interfere with normal use.
Older Hardware Limitations
A mechanical hard drive, limited memory, aging processor, or unsupported computer may be the main reason software adjustments provide little improvement.
What to Expect
Describe the Slowdown
Tell me when the computer feels slow, which activities are affected, when the problem began, and whether important files may be at risk.
Evaluate the Bottleneck
I will examine relevant startup items, storage use and condition, memory demand, Windows health, updates, temperatures, and possible unwanted software.
Review the Options
I will explain whether cleanup, repair, file management, an SSD or memory upgrade, or replacing the computer appears most practical.
Approve the Work
You decide whether to proceed after we discuss the expected work, cost, limitations, data considerations, and any required replacement part.
Maintenance Cannot Make Every Computer Fast
Software cleanup can improve a computer when unnecessary applications, startup activity, storage pressure, unwanted software, or Windows problems are responsible. It cannot turn an underpowered processor into a faster one, repair failing hardware, add missing memory, or make unsupported equipment suitable for every modern application.
If an upgrade or replacement would provide better value than repeated maintenance, I will explain that before recommending additional work.
Possible Maintenance and Performance Solutions
Startup and Background-Software Review
I can review programs that start with Windows, remove clearly unwanted or unused software with your approval, and reduce unnecessary background activity without disabling services simply for the sake of a smaller process count.
Storage and File-Space Review
Temporary files and other safely removable data may be cleared, but personal files should not be deleted merely to produce more free space. Large user files, cloud synchronization, and backup requirements should be discussed before changes are made.
Windows, Driver and Software Attention
Depending on the symptoms, work may include supported Windows updates, correction of update failures, examination of damaged system components, and appropriate application or driver updates. Firmware is not updated automatically without a reason and a discussion of the risk.
Hardware Upgrade Recommendation
Replacing a mechanical hard drive with an SSD or adding compatible memory can sometimes provide a more meaningful improvement than software tuning. I can research compatible parts and explain the likely value before anything is ordered.
When the Problem Needs More Than Maintenance
- A failing hard drive or SSD may require file protection and replacement rather than cleanup.
- Repeated crashes or startup failures may require broader diagnostics.
- Malware or scam-related remote access may require focused security work.
- Serious Windows corruption may require repair or reinstallation.
- An older unsupported computer may be more practical to replace than upgrade.
I will not treat every slow computer as though it has the same cause or sell a generic tune-up when a different solution is more appropriate.
Evaluation, Cost and Turnaround
Free Initial Evaluation
Start by describing when the computer feels slow and which tasks are affected. I will evaluate the system and explain the likely next step. If extensive diagnostics, cleanup, repair, backup, recovery, or upgrade work would involve a charge, I will discuss it before proceeding.
Realistic Turnaround
Most service requires at least two days. Extensive updates, malware scans, failing storage, file backup, hardware testing, workload, or replacement-part availability may extend the timeline.
I will provide the most realistic estimate I can after evaluating the computer rather than promising a completion time before the cause is understood.
30-Day Limited Workmanship Guarantee
PCRuns stands behind the maintenance and repair work it performs for 30 days after the serviced equipment is returned to the customer. If the same problem returns because of the workmanship performed by PCRuns, I will inspect the equipment and correct the covered workmanship without an additional labor charge.
This limited workmanship guarantee does not cover unrelated or newly developed problems, normal wear, hardware failure, malware or reinfection, customer-made software or hardware changes, Windows or application updates, physical damage, misuse, data loss, or problems caused by customer-supplied parts.
Performance also depends on the computer’s hardware, software requirements, internet connection, online services, user workload, and future changes made by software providers.
Your Files and Privacy
I use only the access reasonably needed to evaluate performance and perform the work you approve. Personal files are not intentionally removed unless we have identified and discussed the specific files or folders beforehand.
Maintenance is not a substitute for backup. If the storage device shows signs of failure or important files are otherwise at risk, protecting accessible data may need to come before performance work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a tune-up make my computer much faster?
It depends on what is causing the slowdown. Removing excessive startup software or correcting storage and Windows problems may help noticeably. If the processor, memory, drive, or application requirements are the main limitation, cleanup alone may provide little improvement.
Will you delete my personal files?
Personal files should not be deleted as routine cleanup. If large user files are consuming storage, I will discuss organization, backup, transfer, or removal options with you before making changes.
Do you clean the Windows registry?
I do not recommend indiscriminate registry cleaning as general maintenance. Registry cleaners can remove necessary entries without addressing the real performance problem. Specific damaged settings may be repaired when evidence indicates that they are involved.
Should I upgrade to an SSD?
Replacing a mechanical system drive with a compatible SSD often improves startup and application responsiveness substantially. The value depends on the computer’s age, condition, compatibility, storage needs, and total repair cost.
Could the slowdown be caused by a virus?
Possibly, but slow performance alone does not prove malware is present. Storage failure, limited memory, Windows updates, excessive software, overheating, and other hardware or software problems can produce similar symptoms.
How often does a computer need professional maintenance?
There is no universal schedule. A supported computer that updates normally, has adequate storage, runs only necessary software, and remains backed up may not need a paid annual tune-up. Service is most useful when a specific problem or maintenance need appears.
