Computer Hardware Upgrades and Installation in Milwaukee
The right hardware upgrade can extend a computer’s useful life, but not every available part is compatible or worth installing. The practical value depends on the computer’s age, condition, design, existing components, and how you use it.
I’m John Zettel, the owner and technician at PCRuns. I help Milwaukee-area homeowners and small businesses evaluate and install compatible SSDs, NVMe drives, memory, graphics cards, replacement storage, and other appropriate components.
You will work directly with me. I can research suitable parts, explain the likely benefit and limitations, and discuss the expected cost before anything expensive is ordered or paid work begins.
Milwaukee-area computer service is available by appointment. Please bring the charger or power adapter with a laptop.

Which Hardware Changes Can Be Considered?
Upgrade availability varies widely by model. Some laptops have replaceable memory and storage; others use components permanently attached to the system board. Compatibility should be confirmed before purchasing.
SSD and NVMe Upgrades
Replace a mechanical system drive or expand compatible storage for faster response, additional capacity, or improved reliability.
Memory Upgrades
Add compatible RAM when the computer supports it and current memory capacity is limiting normal applications or multitasking.
Graphics Card Installation
Install a compatible desktop graphics card when the case, motherboard, processor, power supply, cooling, and intended software support it.
Replacement Storage Drives
Replace a failing or inadequate hard drive or SSD while discussing file backup, cloning, recovery, and Windows installation options.
Power, Cooling and Other Parts
Evaluate compatible power supplies, cooling components, batteries, adapters, expansion cards, or other replaceable hardware when appropriate.
Parts Compatibility Research
Identify reasonable component choices and compare price, quality, seller terms, warranty, and expected benefit before purchase.
What to Expect
Discuss Your Goal
Tell me what you want the computer to do better, your approximate budget, and whether important files or specialized software are involved.
Evaluate Compatibility
I will identify the computer and examine the relevant hardware, limitations, condition, and requirements before recommending a part.
Review Parts and Options
I will explain suitable choices, likely benefits, costs, data considerations, and whether upgrading or replacing the computer appears more sensible.
Approve Installation
You decide whether to proceed. No expensive part should be ordered or major work started without discussing it with you first.
Protect Important Files Before Storage Work
Replacing, cloning, repairing, or reinstalling a system drive can place files, applications, settings, and accounts at risk. When the original storage remains readable, important files and backup options should be discussed before major changes are made.
No clone, backup, or recovery attempt can guarantee that every file will be preserved. A failing or damaged drive may already contain unreadable information.
Upgrade Options and Practical Limits
SSD or NVMe Installation
Moving Windows from a mechanical hard drive to a compatible SSD can often improve startup and application responsiveness. Depending on the condition of the old drive and installation, the practical options may include cloning, transferring files, or installing Windows cleanly.
Memory Installation
Additional RAM can help when the computer regularly exhausts its existing memory, but it will not correct a failing drive, damaged Windows installation, overheating, or a processor that cannot meet the workload. The correct type, speed, capacity, and supported configuration must be confirmed.
Graphics and Power Requirements
A graphics-card upgrade may require adequate physical clearance, power connectors, power-supply capacity, cooling, motherboard compatibility, driver support, and a processor capable of supporting the intended use. A more powerful card is not automatically a useful upgrade for every system.
Repair, Upgrade, or Replace
An older computer can be worth upgrading when it remains dependable and the improvement addresses a real limitation. If the combined part and labor cost approaches the practical value of the computer, I will explain when replacement appears more sensible.
How Parts Purchasing Usually Works
I can research compatible components and send you one or more purchasing choices with an explanation of the tradeoffs.
- For a reasonably priced part, I may order it and include its cost in the completed repair charge after discussing it with you.
- For an expensive component, I will normally provide purchasing links and let you make the final purchase decision.
- You may provide your own part, but compatibility, condition, completeness, seller terms, and warranty remain your responsibility.
- Used and refurbished parts can offer value, but their condition and remaining life cannot be known with certainty.
Replacement parts remain subject to the warranty and return policy offered by the manufacturer or seller.
Evaluation, Cost and Turnaround
Free Initial Evaluation
Start by describing the computer, the desired improvement, and your budget. I will evaluate the system and explain the likely next step. If extensive diagnostics, data protection, cloning, installation, or configuration would involve a charge, I will discuss it before proceeding.
Realistic Turnaround
Most service requires at least two days after the necessary equipment is available. Parts research, shipping, data transfer, cloning, Windows installation, updates, testing, workload, or unexpected compatibility problems may extend the timeline.
I will provide the most realistic estimate I can after evaluating the computer and confirming the selected part.
30-Day Limited Workmanship Guarantee
PCRuns stands behind the installation and repair work it performs for 30 days after the serviced equipment is returned to the customer. If the same problem returns because of the workmanship performed by PCRuns, I will inspect the equipment and correct the covered workmanship without an additional labor charge.
This limited workmanship guarantee does not cover unrelated or newly developed problems, normal wear, failure of another component, manufacturer defects, used-part condition, customer-made changes, overclocking, malware, physical damage, electrical damage, misuse, data loss, or problems caused by customer-supplied parts.
Replacement parts remain subject to the warranty and return terms offered by their manufacturer or seller. Performance gains, software compatibility, and continued storage reliability cannot be guaranteed.
Firmware, Overclocking and High-Risk Changes
A BIOS or firmware update is not routine housekeeping. Because an interruption, incorrect file, or unsuccessful update can leave hardware unusable, firmware should be changed only when there is a specific compatibility, stability, security, or manufacturer-supported reason.
PCRuns does not promise overclocking results or automatic performance tuning beyond manufacturer specifications. Stability, heat, power requirements, component life, and warranty implications must take priority over small benchmark gains.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my laptop’s memory or storage be upgraded?
Possibly. Some laptops have replaceable memory and storage, while others have soldered memory, unusual form factors, limited capacity support, or difficult disassembly. The exact model and internal configuration must be checked.
Will an SSD make my computer faster?
Replacing a mechanical system drive with an SSD often improves startup, application loading, and general responsiveness. It will not make the processor or graphics hardware faster, and the overall value depends on the computer’s condition and intended use.
Will cloning preserve everything exactly?
Not always. Cloning can reproduce a healthy readable installation, but existing Windows problems, failing storage, encryption, unusual partitions, boot configuration, and unreadable files can prevent a complete or bootable result.
Can I purchase the part myself?
Yes. I recommend confirming compatibility before ordering. Customer-supplied parts remain subject to the customer’s seller relationship and are excluded from the PCRuns workmanship guarantee when the problem results from the part itself.
Do you automatically update the BIOS?
No. Firmware changes involve risk and should have a specific reason. If a BIOS or firmware update appears necessary for compatibility or repair, I will explain why before proceeding.
How do I know whether an upgrade is worthwhile?
Consider the computer’s age, condition, supported Windows version, current limitations, desired workload, part and labor cost, and the price of a suitable replacement. I will explain when an upgrade appears useful and when it does not.
